Black Friday Tips and Bloghop

Black Friday.

I love it.

With four kids, a husband, (Me, LOL) and countless family and friends to buy for, I count on Black Friday.

So, what tips do I have for you?

1) Pay attention to the ads. If you know you shop somewhere a lot, sign up for their emails. You’ll get first-hand deals all through the year, not just Black Friday.

2) Don’t use credit to shop. I’ve been there, done that, getting into debt to give my kids a good Christmas. It takes longer and costs more to pay off, so really, it’s a BAD idea…. unless…

3) Since I only have a limited amount of money saved up for Christmas, cause, you know, all the year round bills, I capitalize on Intrest Free credit cards.

– Home Depot is 0% for 6 months if you spend $299 or more. Do I need $300 worth of presents from them? Usually, no. They let you buy gift cards using credit, so that’s what I do. Then, next month when I need to buy something from HD, guess what? Yup. Gift cards.

-Amazon.com is 0% for 6 months if you spend $149 or more. I don’t know about gift cards, but I can always spend that much there between books for everyone in the family, friends, (Again, Me)…

-Walmart is running a special right now 0% for 6 months on ANY purchases made in Nov & Dec. I admit, I didn’t have a Walmart card, but when I saw this, I got one. Why? They had a high ticket item (XBox 360 Kinects bundle, which is good out-of-your-seat & family game play for the whole family). As soon as I pay it off, I’ll close the card.

Now, KEY: I’m not advocating using credit cards for Christmas shopping. (See #2)

But, if you’re like me and don’t have a hefty chunk of money for Black Friday, then shop wisely.

ANOTHER NOTE: If you’re approved for a $2500 card, PLEASE, PLEASE, don’t use it all.

You still have to pay it off, and in order to capitalize on the 0% interest, you must pay it off in the time allotted. Tonight (cause I do a lot of shopping online on Thanksgiving day – see sign up for emails) I purchased the majority of gifts I’ll be buying this year, through Amazon.com which has killer deals and usually reads ads so they can match your local sales, and Walmart (RE: Big item). I spent $400.

In order to pay that off in 6 months, it will cost me about $67 a month.

Yeah, I can afford that.

But I couldn’t afford to pay interest.

So, that’s my little bit of advice.

Now for the good stuff:

  1. Definitely great advice for people, Amber. Too many people out there aren’t responsible with money. And, well we all know the situation.
I didn’t buy anything today. It used to make me feel weird to not buy ANYTHING on Black Friday – it felt like I was missing out on good deals I’d regret, but I got over that. I’d probably care more if my family ever wanted anything that was a Black Friday type deal… but they never do. Of course they have to be difficult. 😛

  2. I rather have cash on me since it makes it so much easier to budget for Christmas gifts, but it’s a bit terrifying carrying large wads of cash though!

  3. This is such an awesome giveaway! I would love to be entered:

  5. Yes, definitely pay attention to the ads. If you’re venturing out into the Friday wild it’s good to have done your research and be ready for it 🙂

  6. This is so awesome!!! I have been lusting after one of these for ages and the fact that it’s being given away by some of my favorite authors just makes it that much better!!! Good luck to all but I ‘d be lying if I said I didn’t want to win. lol roeflor@gmail.com

  7. I try to use CC for large purchases and pay off before the rate increase.

Thanks for participating in the giveaway!

  8. You are a brave woman to be go out on Black Friday. I prefer to do the shopping on line.

  9. `I personally hate shopping. One year my mom who hates shopping as well sent each of my daughters gift cards to Walmart… My kids love to shop. I paid my friend to take the kids shopping. hurricanemercedes@yahoo.com

  10. very cool! please count me in! rhob3123@gmail.com

I’m all about the online shopping though!

  11. Good tips! I don’t even have a credit card! It is too easy to fall into the trap of using it now and trying to pay it back later! If I don’t have the money to cover it, I don’t need to buy it. Thanks so much for the giveaway! You rock!

  12. Oops, forgot to add the email. Sorry! brendem7@comcast.net

  13. Great tips. I never shop with my sister. I always spend way too much.

  14. Be aware of the money. Gotta do it.

  15. Thanks for the tips. I usually use my bank card to make my purchases with my one credit card exception- Target. They give 5% off of your purchase and I have a limit on it (since I don’t have too much credit history) so I know exactly how much I can spend. I hope that you had a happy Thanksgiving.

  29. I had a horrible Black Friday shopping day! My daughters and I started out at 11:00 pm last night. Stood inline outside of Best Buy for 2 hrs. in freezing cold. got nothing. Then stood outside of Old Navy for another hour then waited in line hour and a half to check out. Kohl’s would have been 2 hrs. to get checked out. We gave up there. Bath & Body hour and a half check out time. So basically was out all night got home 930 this morning with hardly nothing and so tired and achy and cranky! UGH! Never again for me! I’m done being a Black Friday shopper except online.

  30. refuse to go out on black friday!!
    loving the hop! thanks

  31. I will not go out on Black Friday.Too much chaos. Thanks!

  32. Seriously great advice. I made a stupid cc mistake in college and Im am still recovering, its a lot better now but it was bad for a few years. Use them for what you need but do not spend the money just because the credit limit is there. There are a lot of things now I wish I could have, Kindle Fire, Ipad, new computer. That I cant get yet because I did mess it up back then. Im in shape to be back on track within the next year though! So it is possible to recover but it is long and painful.

    Happy Holidays!
