Blurb:

After a millennia apart, can two vampires rekindle their love, or will the line between right and wrong keep them apart?

Hunted by the demon who imprisoned her for hundreds of years, Ashlyn MacDougal is fleeing with a secret which could destroy her soul. When she runs into her lost love, Connor Gregory, life twists upside down.

Connor has spent the last thousand years as a Judge for the Magic Council, tracking and destroying demons. Especially the abominations–those part demon, part vampire. When he discovers his long ago lover is not only alive, but protecting a half-breed, his confusion knows no bounds.

Thrown together by circumstance, they must resolve their past. With demons after them, Ashlyn and Connor come to find their love still burns. Yet, the secrets she hides, and his duty to his job, might just keep them apart for another eternity.

Excerpt:

Chapter One

Connor Gregory hunted along the city’s back streets. The scent of human blood, fresh on the air, made his senses hum. Hunger roared. It had been hours since he’d drank his last pint of blood, but his responsibilities as Judge for the Magic Council spurred him on, pushing his needs back.

A human cult was striking terror into the hearts of the mortals living in the city. A cult that seemed to know an awful lot about real demon magic, which meant there was most likely a creature from the depths of hell helping them out.

Connor grinned humorlessly at the inky shadows. His job was to hunt the demon down, and kill it.

All in a productive day’s work.

He followed the blood scent through the alleys of a business district. For the southwest, the buildings towering into the sky felt out of place. They also hindered his ability to track.

Connor despised big cities like Phoenix. He’d much rather have stayed up in the mountains, in his cousin’s sleepy little town of Moss Creek. But when duty called…

He rounded a corner, freezing for a split second. At another time, it could have cost him his head–and his life. In a flash, he pressed his back to the wall, easily blending with the shadows in his dark jeans, t-shirt and black duster.

Just down the alley, in front of an oversized dumpster, a group of teenagers knelt on the asphalt. All four took the Goth look to the extreme. One boy’s shaved head glinted from piercings. Black and red swirling tattoos covered the other boy’s skin. The two girls could have been twins with their pale skin, hair obviously dyed black. Encircling their eyes, they wore black make-up that matched their lipstick. And how anyone could walk in thigh-high boots with six-inch heels covered in spikes was beyond him.

He also didn’t get anyone who would wear spike-studded collars.

The kids shifted slightly, allowing him a glimpse at the encircled pentagram on the ground. Runes of destruction and death had been drawn inside each triangle arm. The tattooed boy leaned over the last empty opening, and continued drawing the symbols for a ritual designed to rip a soul from an innocent.

Connor sniffed the air. Blood. Rotting flesh. And the distinct smoky, sulfurous odor of demon.

He reached to the back of his neck and silently withdrew his katana, Akoukirito, from the sheath on his back. A Japanese sword master had crafted both hundreds of years ago. The blade, named for its use in striking down evil, was honed to an edge that rarely dulled.

Connor was as deadly with his hands, but if one of these seemingly innocent kids was a demon, he’d need the blade.

He held Akoukirito down along his leg as he slowly approached the group. He had to stop them from completing the ritual. It was like a nice, juicy steak for demons, full of magic and power they could corrupt.

He sure as hell didn’t want to deal with a demon pumped up on soul magic.

E drew closer. The kids remained oblivious to his presence. With a sigh, he resheathed his sword. They might be working with a demon, but it wasn’t here right now.

He shot a fist at the throat of the tattooed boy drawing the runes. The kid flew back, crashing against the brick wall of the building, choking and sputtering. The chalk clattered to the ground.

The other three jumped up, circling him as if they would actually have a chance to participate in this fight.

Perhaps even win.

Chuckling, Connor crouched and spun, sweeping his foot over the ground, knocking the three on their asses. He reached for the artist, then tossed him near the others.

“Who are you working for?” he demanded, allowing anger to deepen his voice into a menacing growl.

Tattoo still clutched his throat, but glared up at Connor with a hatred only the youth could attain.

“Fuck off,” he rasped.

The other three looked at each other, then inched away from their apparent leader.

Connor strode to the kid, towering over him, staring him down.

Tattoo swallowed, looking around the alley, anywhere but at Connor. As if realizing he’d shown fear, he jerked his chin back up.

“Who are you working for?” Connor repeated.

The boy glanced at his partners, then back. “Don’t know what you mean.”

Moving so fast there was no way these mortals could follow, he grabbed the kid’s neck, picked him up and slammed him against the wall. Tattoo’s feet kicked uselessly at the brick, high above the ground.

“I won’t ask again,” Connor growled.

The boy squeaked and the smell of urine soaked into the air. His chest rose and fell rapidly as he began to hyperventilate.

One of the girls shouted, “You’re gonna kill him.”

Connor slowly turned his head, staring at her.

She and her friends gasped, crab walking backwards until they hit the wall on the other side of the alley.

He knew what they saw. His anger at the stupidity of these children had fired his blood. His fangs, extended and showing clearly through his grim smile. His eyes, a blood red, blazing with fury.

They saw the monster inside, the monster he was.

He used it to his advantage, and lied. “I’ll snap his neck before you can blink, little girl, if you don’t answer my question.”

She sniffled as the other girl started to sob. The boy beside them inched farther away, heading in the direction of the alley’s entrance.

“I-I… we don’t know his name,” she replied.

“But he calls himself…” Connor prompted.

“Diablo.”

Connor chuckled, a raspy sound that made the girl flinch. “The devil, aye? Not quite.”

He let the boy slide to the ground and told the girl, “Tell me everything.”

After she’d listed off several addresses where he might find this ‘Diablo’, Connor pulled a bag from his duster and sprinkled the special sand over the pentagram, then ground it in beneath his boot. By the time he was done, the markings had nearly disappeared.

He glared at the kids. “Play with magic again, and I’ll be back. Next time won’t be as pleasant.” He strode out of the alley, not giving any of them another glance.

Out on one of the busy main streets, he scanned each direction. Trying to track any scent beneath the fumes of exhaust and people bustling about would be difficult, if not impossible.

He’d check out the addresses, but with the ritual not taking place, the demon would know something was wrong when he didn’t receive a nice bite of power. He’d be hightailing his cowardly ass out of his preferred hangouts.

Connor headed down the street toward a bar that catered to those like him. He could get a drink, then finish the night’s frustrating hunt.

Two blocks from the bar, the air filled with the stench of sulfurous smoke. He eased along the sidewalk, searching for the demon. Across the street, a man stood in front of a closed door. His black clothes, inky dark hair and pale face pegged him as another Goth. But the red encircling the green in his eyes told Connor another story.

Demon.

He inhaled deeply, letting his heightened senses sift through the scents.

The guy wasn’t pure demon. Something else, most likely vampire, filled his blood.

A half-breed.

Connor froze, staring at the man. As a Judge, one of his jobs was to kill any half-breed he came across.

Tonight was turning into a wild ride.

And just maybe he’d get lucky enough to catch the half-breed, dispose of him without too much damage to the city.

Half-breeds were well known for being crazed with bloodlust, the monsters inside them unable to coexist easily in any human body.

Between the vampire blood and the demon soul, this had to be the one responsible for the murders throughout the city. It would explain the extent of the depraved torture the victims had suffered.

Connor moved to the street, keeping an eye on the half-breed while watching for a break in the traffic. The man left the doorway and strode down the street. Exactly the way Connor had come. Probably going to search out the teenagers and find out why the ritual hadn’t been completed.

Connor stayed on his side of the street, matching the demon’s pace. Minutes passed. Then the demon stopped, pulling a cell phone out of his pocket and answering a call.

If he’d been closer, or the traffic–human and vehicle–lighter, Connor could have listened in as he wanted. Instead, he had to resort to trying to read the demon’s lips, something he’d never quite mastered. Saying to hell with it, he watched a small opening in the traffic draw closer.

Just as he was ready to make a dash for it, he saw her.

She stood just beyond the demon, her red hair up in a chignon. Strands curled down around her heart-shaped face, like he remembered. She glanced his way, though he could tell she didn’t see him.

His heart screamed she must be Ashlyn. From her high cheekbones, small nose, and wide, startling green eyes, to the lush body he’d once known intimately, unhidden by the sleeveless blouse or the slim ankle-length skirt, she looked exactly the same.

But she couldn’t be the woman of his memories.

The sounds of the city faded, replaced by the past.

Scottish war cries echoed in the dark of the night as coming ships roused the clan. They blocked off the cliff stairs that led down a hundred feet to the beach, confident they could repel the invaders. Until they looked down, only to see red-eyed beasts scaling the rock itself.

His last glance of Ashlyn had been her fear-laden eyes, watching him as she shepherded the children through the hidden door at the base of the clan’s castle.

All had died that night, but for Connor and two of his cousins. When they woke, it was as raving beasts.

Vampires.

Ashlyn had not survived.

Connor shook the memories away, staring at the woman whose image, after a thousand years, still haunted his dreams every night.

The demon approached her. She held out her hand, and the hell-spawn touched her soft, creamy skin, then bent closer to say something in her ear.

Connor dodged into the street, ignoring the blaring of horns as he raced for her. Ashlyn or not, she must be saved.

At the commotion, she looked up, and met his gaze. Her eyes widened. She gasped, bringing her free hand up to cover her heart.

“Ashlyn!”

Her lips began to curl in the shy smile he remembered so well.

Chills raced over his skin. His lungs emptied on an explosive breath. His stomach clenched as if a car had slammed into him.

Memories jerked him in a vortex of confusion.

It couldn’t be Ashlyn… could it?

His heart skipped a beat, then drummed into a gallop. Hot emotion thrummed through him.

She glanced at the demon by her side. The smile disappeared, replaced by haunting fear.

She grabbed the demon’s arm and together they raced down the street.

The next big thing

Today,
I’m bringing to you the Next Big Thing. I was tagged by the lovely Yelena Casale. (Check out her Next Big Thing post here). This is the 17th week of this blog hop, designed for writers to connect with readers and reveal a little bit about their current work in progress.

What is the working title of your book?

I know it will be ‘something’ storm, but I haven’t quite decided yet. I’m calling it Vamp 4 (Heart of a Vampire, book 4).

Where did the idea come from for the book?

When I get a book idea, my mind automatically wonders how it could be turned into a series. So, the HoaV series came with an idea for my first couple. In book 4, readers get to know Brandon Wulfgar, one of the Viking twins who guard the vampire king.

What genre does your book fall under?

Vampire paranormal romance

Which Actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?

Salma HayekThis is hilarious to answer, because I actually have pictures of my characters for my own reference. Brandon Wulfgar would be played by Chris Hemsworth (from Thor of course). Celeste Wilder would be Salma Hayek.

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

Hmm. I don’t actually have one yet. Okay, made up on the fly: An old-school Viking warrior must convince a mortal detective that the paranormal is real in order to save her family, and her soul.

What do you think? Yeah, needs work.

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

My plan is to self-publish this entire series.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

I’m writing it right now. I started on October 9th, with the goal to be done before the end of the month… at least with this first draft, LOL.

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

Um, I have no idea. I generally don’t compare myself to other authors. Anyone who’s read the books in this series want to answer?

Who or what inspired you to write this book?

The characters. They’re always the culprits. They get in my head, demanding their story be told and refuse to go away until I comply.

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

I know what I wonder about. How can an immortal vampire and a mortal homicide detective find their happily ever after.

Okay, this was fun. Thanks for listening to me 🙂

For next week (#18) check out who I tagged in The Next Big Thing:

Did I Notice Your Book Blogfest, October 17, 2012

We all love books, at least I assume since you’re here, you love reading as much as I do.  The rules for this hop were easy.

1) It can’t be my own book

&

2) It can’t be on any bestseller lists

The book I chose is one I’ve read and loved.

Guest Author and Give@way~Cera duBois of the Hunter’s Dagger Series

The Rest of the Story…

Keeping the facts straight when writing a series.

Thank you, Amber, for having today as your guest!

*Always, thanks so much for stopping by 🙂 *

Whether you are a reader or a writer of fiction, we often fall in love with the secondary characters or the “world” of a story. So much so, that readers often request authors to “finish” the story. This is what happened with the Star Wars universe. If you ask George Lucas, his story ended at the last scene in Episode 6, Return of the Jedi. Sure, he wrote and produced the Prequel which fans either loved or hated, but we (I’m a Star Wars fan) all wanted the rest of the story.

Do Han and Leia marry? Does Luke rebuild the Jedi Order? Does Leia become a Jedi?

Fortunately for us, Mr. Lucas made a business decision that has raked in millions for him, has kept the franchise alive and well and has, for the most part, satisfied us fans. Yes, Han and Leia not only get married, they have a set of twins, Jacen and Jaina and a son, Anakin, all of whom become favorite characters in the series about Luke’s new Jedi Order. And yes, Leia becomes a Jedi, she actually becomes a Master eventually. A lot happens in the Galaxy Far, Far Away beyond that final scene with the Force ghosts of Anakin, Obi-Wan and Yoda watching the Death Star exploding over the forest moon of Endor with the Ewoks playing primitive instruments and Luke, Leia, Han, Chewbacca and the droids rejoicing the end of the Evil Empire.
Yeah, did I mention I’m a fan? But having read this series of books, written by various writers, I’ve seen some of the problems with writing a big series. One of the biggest for me is inconsistencies… But this I can understand in a series as huge and diverse as the Star Wars books. These books aren’t written by George Lucas or even endorsed by him … Oh, he makes money from them and sanctions their plots as part of the Expanded Universe, but these authors are only using his “world” and characters. If he chooses to continue with his personal vision of the story—it will be nothing like what has been written. Something this fan hopes never happens. I love the books!

However, I think if a series is written by one author, within one “world” and with the same set of characters, he or she better get the facts straight. I hate inconsistencies and nothing will throw me out of a story faster than changing the facts late in the game.

So, how does an author prevent this from happening? Because it’s the little things that may and do bug the observant reader. Like the heroine’s sister’s green eyes (in book one) now are blue in book five—with no mention of colored contacts. Or the long lost friend whose name was John and now it’s James—without the benefit of the character changing his name.

We all have seen them, but hopefully we can prevent these with some basic record keeping. For both of my series, The Hunter’s Daggers Series and The Colton Gamblers, I use the Microsoft Office program One Note as a virtual notebook. There’s a lot of writing programs out there, and most of them have features that allow you to save notes, or information within the program. I use One Note simply because I like it and it’s easy to use, if you’re a Microsoft user.

For my series The Hunter’s Daggers, I created a virtual notebook and each book has a section. Within these sections, there are pages. I have a page in each book section for research, character profiles, calendar of events, and general notes. On the research page, I’ll copy/paste entire web pages. This makes life easy when I need to make sure my facts are straight, I simply go to my Notebook and find the article. I don’t have to do another web search. In the character profile page, I note anything I might need to know later—such as physical appearances, and any facts about that character I might need to know later. The calendar should be self-explanatory. On the general notes page, I list anything else I might need to know–like brainstorming sessions; I copy/paste the book info, like the blurb and synopsis; all the links to the files; and important dates, like when I started the book and when I finally finished it.

For example, here’s what the profile for Brad Morris/Austin Calhoun from A Hunter’s Angel and A Hunter’s Blade looks like. This was copied from my One Note page. The things in parentheses and italics I added to clarify things.

Bradley Andrew Morris AKA Austin Calhoun

*Born: August 23, 1979, age 32 at the start of A Hunter’s Angel

*Turned into a Vampire by Shane Chamberlain in January 2011.

*Eyes: Hazel/ After his turn, they glow amber when he drops his glamour.

*Hair: Golden Brown, he wears it sort of like Rob Pattinson in Twilight (LOL… I know, this is just so I can picture it so that I can describe it in the books.)

*Height: 6’2”

*Known for his one-night stands and never committing to a woman.

*His father is sentenced to life in prison when Brad is 3 yrs old after he kills a cop during a robbery of a convenience store. He hasn’t seen his father since.

*Grows up on his grandparents’ ranch in East Texas with his mother and sister Diane, who is a year and half younger than him.

*He marries Samantha Anderson when he is 18 after she gets pregnant with his first son, Brandon. She files for divorce in 2001. She remarried a rancher and lives in Texas with Brandon.

*He joins the Army after high school graduation and becomes an MP and eventually works his way into the CID (Criminal Investigation Division). He deploys to Afghanistan in 2002 and to Iraq in 2003. He ETS’s (this is a military acronym which means he leaves the Army) and joins the FBI in 2005.

*He marries his second wife, Jamie Becker, in 2005 after she becomes pregnant after a short series of one-night stands. They are married for 2 years until he cheats on her and she divorces him. She now lives in New Jersey with their son Matthew…

This goes on for every fact that makes up Brad/Austin’s character.

So, hopefully I don’t mix up something that is vital to his character. And hopefully you fall as much in love with this ex-soldier-turned-FBI Special Agent-turned vampire vampire hunter as I did when I wrote him in A Hunter’s Angel, and I just had to tell the rest of his story.

A Hunter’s Angel, Book 1 The Hunter’s Dagger Series

The serial killer stalking Clayton, Pennsylvania, isn’t all that has Chief of Police Grace Wallace worried. For a year, she’s tried to forget Special Agent Ian McHenry and now he’s the expert the FBI sent to catch the killer. She can’t stay away from him, but something primal is telling her to run to save much more than just her heart. Despite the strict code of ethics Ian vowed to follow as a vampire hunter, he craves Grace’s blood above all others. If he chooses to stay, Ian risks losing his chance at divine forgiveness. But if he leaves Grace unprotected from the evil he’s hunted for over a century, he loses more than just his soul…

***Here’s a never  before seen excerpt featuring Brad, Ian and Grace***

She looked at him as if she wanted to say something, but Brad interrupted by moving in beside her. Ian hadn’t missed the two of them talking earlier while he waited with Sheryl and the children.

“We’re finishing up. I was thinking of heading back to Clayton for something to eat. I’m starved enough to eat a horse, shoes and all,” Brad said, looking at Grace.

She laughed. “Me, too. But I’ll pass on the shoes, I think.”

The sound shot right though Ian. When was the last time she laughed with me?

His answer came back to him like a double edged sword—the night you almost killed her while making love to her.

Grace brushed a lock of coppery hair from her lightly freckled cheek. Brad watched the action, and Ian sensed his lust. Ian’s jealousy was potent and instant. He fought his darker side and managed to prevent his fangs from descending.

Brad glanced at him, and Ian didn’t need to read his mind to know his intentions. Focused once more on Grace, Brad stepped closer and tilted his head toward her.

Brad was a good two inches taller than Ian. His light brown hair styled in one of the latest disheveled trends and the sun highlighted it with gold. The Texan had that cowboy charm most women easily fell for.

Ian didn’t pay much attention to their conversation. He was too busy fighting the urge to slip into Brad’s mind and make him dance around like a monkey. Maybe have him even scratch his crotch. Wasn’t that what all the Sunday paper cartoons made fun of?

He shook off the crazy notion. Ian didn’t like using his powers on his friends and rarely read Brad’s mind. But Ian couldn’t stop thinking Brad Morris was the last thing Grace needed.

The only thing that prevented him from sending Brad away was his connection with Grace. She wasn’t interested in Brad—now. But given time, would she fall under Brad’s spell as easily as if he had some sort of supernatural power? He had seen his friend charm the pants off more than one woman.

Ian clamped down so hard on his teeth it was amazing he didn’t break them off. The accent, Ian silently accused. He remembered all too well her fascination with his brogue when they’d met a year and a half ago. She’d quizzed him on it until he told her a satisfying story of picking up his Irish parents’ accents.

Brad’s chuckle quickly brought him back to the present. They talked as if Ian wasn’t even there, as if they’d known each other for years. Had they carried on like this last year? Ian couldn’t remember.

She asked, “Hey, you still hungry enough to eat the shoes off a horse?”

Brad smiled broadly. “Yep. What do you say we get out of here?

But she might have bigger problems when her cowboy neighbor, Austin Calhoun, ambles into her bar. Austin hasn’t been a vampire for long, but he is determined to prove to himself that he’s worthy of his hunter’s dagger. Brigit’s rare beauty and blade-sharp tongue enchants him. She ignites a passion he thought was dead, but is she the killer his master sent him to destroy? During Austin’s investigation regarding Brigit’s involvement in the deaths, an old crime surfaces connected to her human best friend. These two immortal enemies have to join forces to solve the mystery before someone else dies. But can they survive the heat of their own desire?

***Excerpt***

“Why don’t you enlighten me?”

She glowered at him for several moments. Then she closed her eyes and spoke in a language he didn’t understand. Before he knew it, a fire sparked to life in the old stone hearth across the room. A second later, he flew out of his chair and shoved hard against the edge of the bar behind him.

He struggled against the invisible restrains, but she’d taken him completely off guard. He was powerless to break free.

Standing, she kicked the chair to the side and stalked toward him. She could kill him right here and now, but…holy hell, she was damned sexy.

She stopped in front of him and growled, “Let’s get something established about werewolves. There are two kinds. The lesser wolves who are made. And the Lykan who are born. I’m not one of the degenerates. I was born a Lykan in 1647. The first child of Valeriu and Elena. I’m an alpha and you are nothing more than a fledgling just hatched.”

He broke free of her power by drawing on his own. When he moved toward her, Austin held his hands to his side, ready to grab the special knife he had sheathed inside his jacket. His fangs had long ago descended ready for a fight. “I don’t really give a flying fuck whether you were made, born, or hatched.”

When the energy of her power touched him again, he pulled the knife, and the silver blade caught the dim light of the fire in the hearth when he opened the long switchblade. “I want to know if you’re the one preying on these people.”

Her eyes widened and she backed up a step as he approached. “I told you I didn’t attack those humans. I haven’t killed a mortal in over a hundred years. How many innocents have you snacked on tonight? How many of them did you want to kill?”

“I don’t hurt my prey,” he said through clenched teeth and held her icy gaze. He’d never let her know battling the beast within every feeding was the hardest thing he’d ever done.

After forcing himself to take a deep breath, he lowered the knife and released some of the tension zinging through his body. “If you didn’t kill those people then you have nothing to worry about. Best way to figure out who did is by working together.” He put the silver blade away, and his fangs retracted.

“What do you have planned?”

He didn’t miss the slight quiver in her voice. He should finish all this right here and now so he could get back to Ireland and whatever life he’d scraped together, but something needled him into doing a thorough investigation.

“We begin with you telling me everything you remember from those nights you became the big, bad wolf.”

Bio:

Cera duBois has a strong belief in never giving up on your dreams…

Although Cera was unable to read due to dyslexia and a learning disability until she was in the fourth grade, she always had a story to tell. She wrote her first novel in eleventh grade when she had to keep a journal for her academic English class. Since her life was far from exciting growing up as a farm girl in West Central Pennsylvania, she decided to rely on her imagination to give her something to write about. Over the course of the school year, she wrote a tangled romance set in the Deep South during the Civil War.  Becoming an author was her ultimate dream. Despite holding a BS in secondary social studies education from Penn State University, she currently works full-time as a medical secretary. A mother of a teenage son and pre-teen daughter, she lives near Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, with her husband of nearly 20 years. If she isn’t sitting in a quiet corner with her laptop, warm days will find her in the English garden surrounding her house. Cera loves to read and is interested in history, romance, science fiction and the paranormal. She also writes contemporary Westerns under her real name of Sara Walter Ellwood.

She finally catches up to him only to face more than she bargained for in a too-sexy sheriff who makes her remember she’s still a woman. New Release~Woot! and other news

I’ve written everything from urban fantasy, to paranormal, to erotic romance, and I’ve enjoyed each story.

Recently, the whole 50 shades of you know what, has plopped erotic and BDSM stories in the news seemingly all over the place.

I think that’s awesome for authors, because in my mind, it’s just one more thing getting headlines and therefore getting people thinking about books and reading.

Okay, so I may be a bit optimistic, but I’m okay with that 😉

It also helped me to take the plunge and publish the first of a short story series I’ve had in mind for a couple years, based on Red Riding Hood… adult style, LOL.

So enjoy a PG peek of Red’s Wolf: Beginnings

Most know of me, or at least have heard my tale.

Certainly you would recognize my crimson cloak, perhaps you have even been regaled by tales of my battles against the wolves.

But as with most stories, that is only part of my life.

Once I was the belle of my village. Men came from miles around to try to win my heart, and my hand.

Only one succeeded.

Yet, the story of my beloved Jonah remains shrouded in the mists of time. Nothing is mentioned of all we meant to each other, of the family we created, raised and sent out into the world.

If you are truly curious, then sit for a while. Join me and discover for yourself the truth about the woman with the dark red riding hood.

***
Samantha Grant headed down the wide, dirt path along the edge of the dark forest, swinging a basket of food. The late afternoon sun shone brightly. The air was cool and scents of pine trees and wild flowers filled the autumn air. It helped calm the butterflies fluttering in her stomach.
Brushing back a strand of long red hair from her face, she tried to soothe her nerves by whistling a simple tune.
Today she was to meet Jonah at the edge of the forest, for a picnic lunch. Her stomach quivered with a girl-like giddiness as she anticipated the tryst with her newly found love.
She was of marrying age. Her childhood friends were long attached, some already with babies. Men travelled from villages near and far, hoping to convince her to accept their proposals. Yet no one had managed to capture her attention like Jonah.
He reminded her of a pirate from one of the countless old tales Gran used to tell, late at night in front of the fireplace. From monsters to heroes, She’d known of a story for everything. A pang touched Samantha’s heart from thoughts of her beloved Gran, gone now for nearly a year.
The sun dipped behind some clouds as a chill wind blew over her from the forest. Scents of something she couldn’t name, almost irresistibly sweet, yet underlain by an odor of rot, swept through the air. Her steps faltered. Shivers crawled over her skin as the urge to turn and enter the thick, deep shadows between the trees beckoned.
Gran had warned her to always stay away from the frightening forest. Strange beasts roamed there, creeping out during the dark of night to steal children or rip townsfolk to pieces. Samantha backed up a step, ready to turn and flee back home.
But nearby, just a little further, was where Jonah wanted to meet. Her nerves thrummed, her pulse raced faster. For today, she and Jonah would consummate their love.
She ignored her feelings of trepidation and continued on, if a bit faster.
Finally, she rounded a large rock jutting up from the earth.
Jonah stood in shadow, his back to her as he stared into the forest.
She took a moment to watch him, enjoying how the wind pushed his shirt taut against the muscles of his back. Dark trousers encased thick legs, full of strength. His very presence was commanding, and comforting. This was a man who would always keep her protected and well cared for.
She tugged her bodice down a bit, adjusting her chemise to reveal more cleavage. She wasn’t quite indecent, but a thrill swept through her blood as Jonah turned. His gaze swept over her face, dropped to the swell of her breasts.
Strapping, strong, he towered over her slight form. His dark hair and strange golden eyes enhanced the image.
And when he touched her, she felt like a woman.
“Sami,” he whispered, his voice deep, husky.
The sound slid down her spine like silk. “I’m here.”

Guest Author – Liz Crowe and Conditional Offer: Stewart Realty Book 5

Please welcome the lovely Liz Crowe to the blog today. Not only is she a terrific author, but does she have some stories to tell : )

Sometimes I feel like that chick “Dharma” – you know, from Dharma and Greg? The free spirit girl married to the zipped up attorney? One of the long running jokes on that show was that Dharma had done pretty much everything. If you mentioned you liked a Led Zepplin song she’d played backup guitar for the band. She’d piloted a hot air balloon around the world and taught sign language to chimps. You name it, she’d done it.

I find myself saying things like “well, when I lived in Turkey,” or “when my passport was stolen in Southern Spain,” or “well the fourth time I saw Paris in the springtime” a lot. And many times people think I’m full of it.  When my 8 year old daughter told her 2nd grade teacher that she was born in Hiroshima, Japan and had lived in 2 other countries, and ridden elephants in Thailand when she was three the teacher called me, “worried about Julia’s tendency to exaggerate and lie.”  Yeah.

Well, I’ve been blessed/cursed with that sort of life. I’ve worked in Washington D.C. for one of the largest non profit fund raising entities known to the modern world (United Way), managed a daily newspaper’s graphics and special sections department, been marketing director for a giant corporation that owns nursing homes, lived in 3 countries, travelled to many, sold real estate and now I’m a fairly successful writer and own a fast growing craft brewery. Yeah.

It’s been an interesting life and I try to channel a lot of it into my books. As a result, I have a style and sort of genre bending formula I like to call “romance for real life.” It’s full of heat, and heart but the people do not always act the way traditional romance characters do. They F%$# up in other words and I let them. They screw up perfectly good relationships by being selfish, rude, or mistrustful. I have won a lot of readers who say “GOD I threw my kindle across the room when ‘heroine’ said that to ‘hero.’ But when is the next book coming out ???”

It does not work for everyone, but it does for me so I’m sticking with it!

Conditional Offer: Stewart Realty Book 5

Craig Robinson and Suzanne Baxter had no reason to meet, no real excuse to be friends. But when heart calls to heart…blood to blood…should two people who seem destined to be together heed the spin of Fate’s wheel?

Craig spent years floating through life on cruise control, using directionless jobs, his rock band, swimming, and a string of older women in his bed to smother feelings of loneliness and loss.  He finally thought he had found his true love in one Sara Thornton — A sexy, beautiful, fellow real estate agent and mentor. But his self-doubt and innate sense of failure is only reinforced when he realizes her heart belongs to another man.

When Sara introduces him to Suzanne, a woman fighting her own demons from an abusive marriage and subsequent feelings of inadequacy and deep unhappiness, that chance moment snaps Craig’s hazy existence into crystal clear focus.  A bond born of instant physical attraction is nurtured by time and shared experience, and plenty of erotic energy.

As Suzanne’s past continues to haunt her, making her push Craig away just as he thinks he’s getting closer, each of them must come to terms with their true selves and face their ultimate realities.
